Aluminium is very reactive. It protects itself by forming a strong and stable surface of Aluminium oxide. This Oxide-Layer can even be improved by artificial oxidation, for example by Plasma treatment with an Oxygene process gas.
Oxide can be removed by Plasma etching with a Halogen or an Argon process gas. This is necessary for example to receive a got electrical contact when beeing bonded or to take profit of the high surface energy for beeing coated or painted.
